In November of 2007, a list of 54 nursing homes considered to be some of the worst in their states was released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Under pressure from Democratic legislators, an additional 77 nursing homes, also on the Special Focus Facilities list, have been made public as of February 2008.

What Are Special Focus Facilities?

All elder care facilities are inspected at least annually by both the CMS and state agencies. Most nursing homes in the US will have some deficiencies found during inspection. A range of 6 or 7 deficiencies is common and they are generally corrected promptly.
