Cameo Carving

The WWE launched NXT as a separate brand on February 23, 2010. With the hope of bridging the gap between independent and commercial stardom, NXT promised to showcase the future of professional wrestling. Like "Tough Enough", NXT would be a reality based show and competition. The winner of the competition would receive a WWE contract, along with a title shot at a future pay-per-view event. The winner would also appear on WWE's flagship shows, RAW and Smack Down. With the stage all set, eight rookies would vie to be WWE's new breakout star.

The rookies would also be mentored by eight professionals, primarily made up of seasoned ring veterans and superstars. Among the rookies was a multi-talented Englishman named Wade Barrett. Barrett was technically sound and truly charismatic. Barrett, who was a product of WWE's developmental system, seemed to outshine the rest of the competitors. After weeks of skills tests, matches and weekly reviews, it was time for the judges and the WWE Universe to make their decision.

The Nexus Takes The WWE By Storm

On June 1, 2010, Barrett was announced the winner of NXT Season 1. While this did not come as a shock to many, it certainly impacted his fellow competitors. Barrett was ecstatic as he announced his plans and future goals. Barrett, however, seemed genuinely concerned about the future of those eliminated from the competition. This included Justin Gabriel, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Skip Sheffield, Darren Young, Michael Tarver and Daniel Bryan. Barrett then disappeared for a few weeks, while the creative department was carving out his road to success.
