Modern small arms have evolved into the most effective weapon systems in warfare partly because of their proliferation worldwide. Often during action war movies, we watch infantrymen make deadly shots fired from their pistols along with firing their submachine guns causing the rat-tat-tat-tat sounds. Many armies employ these small combat arms worldwide. According to military analysts, all handheld firearms are considered to be small arms weapon systems. Since the flintlock musket introduction during the 17th century, military small arms weapon systems have evolved rapidly in the areas of pistols and rifles.

M1911A1 Pistols

Soldiers and military police personnel use pistols as defensive weapons. The weapons are small in size and light in weight, which makes them useful and handy for defensive combat. The M1911A1 pistols have been the US army’s standard personal weapon for the past 75 years. These 45 caliber pistols are recoil-operated, magazine-fed, semi-automatic weapons that fire one round when the triggers are pulled. The M1911A1 pistols have served the US military through the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm.

Beretta PA MAS GI Pistols

Modern Beretta PA MAS GI pistols are superior to their predecessors. The pistols have light aluminum alloy frames; they are semi-automatic, double-action hand guns. In the past, US army personnel enjoy using the pistols for self-defense; however, the weapon suffered from a few setbacks. First, the slides initially employed in the pistols had services lives for only 6,000 shots before the slides would likely break. Second, French soldiers were disappointed with the slides in the guns; therefore, new Italian stainless steel slides replaced the original slides. Today the Beretta PA MAS GI pistols are more effective weapons.
